ทางช้างเผือก (Milky Way) คือดาราจักรที่เป็นที่ตั้งของระบบสุริยะและโลกของเรา

เส้นผ่าศูนย์กลางของดาราจักรทางช้างเผือก มีระยะทางระหว่าง 150,000 ถึง 200,000 ปีแสง และมีจำนวนดาวฤกษ์ประมาณ 1 แสนล้าน ถึง 4 แสนล้านดวง ส่วนที่สว่างที่สุดของทางช้างเผือกอยู่บริเวณกลุ่มดาว คนยิงธนู ซึ่งเป็นทิศทางไปสู่ใจกลางดาราจักร ณ จุดศุนย์กลางของดาราจักรทางช้างเผือก เป็นแหล่งคลื่นวิทยุที่มีความเข้มข้นสูง

ดาวฤกษ์ที่เห็นบนท้องฟ้า เป็นดาวที่อยู่ในกาแล็กซี่ของเรา หรือกาแล็กซี่ทางช้างเผือก (The Milky Way Galaxy) มีลักษณะเป็นฝ้าขาวคล้ายเมฆบางๆ อยู่โดยรอบท้องฟ้า (คือ ดวงดาวประมาณแสนดวง) กาแล็กซี่ทางช้างเผือก เป็นกาแล็กซี่แบบกังหัน เนื่องจากมองด้านบนและด้านล่างจะเห็นว่ามีโครงสร้างเป็นรูปจาน หรือจักร หรือขดหอย (Spiral Structure) โดยจุดศูนย์กลางจะเป็นรูปวงรี (Ellipsoid) มีความยาวถึง 100,000 ปีแสง
